The moment I saw Nina Rowan's new book in her Daring Hearts series I knew I had to read it. I absolutely adored her second book, so naturally I was very drawn to this one. It did not disappoint, not even for a moment. Nina Rowan's writing is amazing, her storytelling and developing is creative and her characters are very well fleshed out.
This story follows Talia Hall who has been in love with her childhood friend for a very long time. James Forester is an adventurer. He doesn't want to be tied down to London alone, he wants to go out and explore the world. So it was much to his surprise when one evening right before leaving for a year Talia corners him to confess her love for him. Even thought he rejected her - for the fear that marrying Talia could change a lot of things - that one kiss they shared before he left kept Talia on his mind and in his dreams.
Oh what a lovely story. Nina has a way of writing Historical romances that aren't just about the romance. There is a storyline in between what's going on. Nina wants to make a difference in the society by exposing the unjust ways the prison treats young boys and hopes that they can carry out a program to help the juvenile delinquents learn how to read and write and properly fit into the London society. As Talia tries to stumble through several obstetrical in her way, including the prison's deputy - James makes an unexpected return home and sparks fly.
Talia and James relationship in the book was so sweet even if it felt rocky. The attraction and the depth of the passion between them is quiet clear from the start. It is obvious that James cares about her, and even thought there had been certain spots in the book where I believed he needed a book slap to the head - he did tend to redeem himself along the way. The interaction between them was witty and I enjoyed watching James step into the role of trying to help her, despite wanting to keep Talia at an arms reach.
Talia is a fiery woman who is trying to escape the shadows of her mother, who had an affair and left her father for another man. She is fine not getting married if she cannot have James, as her focus is on reforming the way a prison for the young boys are run. She has a lot of passion for what she does, head strong and won't stop at nothing. Talia was an awesome character and it was so easy to root for her cause as well as the blooming relationship between her and James.
Like I said. I adore Nina's writing and can sit and talk about her work here all day. Her historical romance novels I feel are unique and well-developed. I absolutely love how she sticks to the story in between and not just the romance instead of cramming it all in the end. I am looking forward to more.

That key makes me curious. Nice cover
ReplyDeleteCompelling review, and I love that she didn't sit and home and pine for her wandering love. She decided to make a difference in the world. Yay, for strong heroines!
ReplyDeleteWell, Nina, I'm still in California with the drought and dead lawns. :-) I hope you're enjoying Wisconsin. I am just flabbergasted with the great reviews your series is getting. And this reviewer's description of your in-depth story writing makes me anxious to get every one of your books right now...although my budget permits me to buy only one book at a time, so I'm going to start with A Study In Seduction (just bought it today). Thanks for your tour and this post! jdh2690@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteTalia sounds like a pretty kick-ass character. I like that she could care less whether she's heading to the altar or not, and that her priorities lie in helping the boys.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really good!
It is hard to resist a strong heroine! I love the cover on this one, soft but sensual as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!!
Sorry I have been so busy, I need to email you about doing another read. Maybe Midnight Thief next?
You should totally go for it!!! :D
DeleteOh we have some books by the author in French but I'm not sure it's this series... I confess I was not really attracted by the books released here but maybe I should get a go and try them. thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this series but it sounds really good. I love when a book has a strong heroine :) Also historical fiction is something I've been enjoying lately. So glad you enjoyed this one and great review, Lily :)
ReplyDeleteThis series sounds awesome! I just added all of the books to my HR wishlist . . . except for this one, b/c Amazon is being stupid and not listing preorders from Hachette for some reason. BUT I added it on Goodreads, so I won't forget! Great review ;)
ReplyDeleteWow, sounds like I need to read something by Nina!
ReplyDeleteTalia sounds like a strong character to read about. I like how their relationship sounds rocky but sweet! Great review Lily!
ReplyDeleteNaomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace
Talia is a character that I think I would enjoy her fieriness.
ReplyDeleteI don't enjoy historicals but my coblogger does, will let her know. Thanks Lily!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an incredible story, Lily. I can tell Talia has some spunk if she declared her love to James, was rejected, but still carried a torch for him. James sounds like he did need a good book slap to the head on occasion but I'm glad it seems they worked things out. Hmm, another historical to add to my TBR. Lovely review, Lily!
