Oh boy, where do I even start?
First I wanted to say was that I started this book as a buddy read with the wonderful Ali from My Guilty Obsession but due to a lot of things going on in my personal life I ended up finishing the book just today.
The Winner's Curse is about a privileged daughter of a general named Kestrel. She is a Valorian a group of people that have decided that they are better then everyone else and have taken over Herrani's cities and people as their slaves.
So Kestrel ends up accidentally winning a slave during an auction, and now she doesn't know what to do with him - because she doesn't really want to use him as a slave.
Her father wants her to become a soldier and it's not what Kestrel want's, she wants to play the piano - she doesn't feel she is good enough to be a soldier. So her father gives her a choice, she could either become a soldier or get married.
But what Kestrel doesn't know is that she invited trouble into the house and her entire perfect world is about to come crumbling down.
Eh... sounds familiar? I already read 2 other books that came out this year that sound so much like this plot that I am really starting to wonder if there was a special theme going on between the authors. It's like they said down and said. 'Oh hey... If we are going to write YA literature for 2014. Let's make sure it's set in the future, but with old world beliefs. The main character must be a female, who is troubled and questions everything. There are two different classes of people, and one of them must be captured to be their slaves. Sprinkle a little bit of disobedience on top of it, with a little bit of forbidden romance, and drama that piles all the way in the end. Volia!'
Ugh...
Seriously... think my brain hurts.
I wanted to like this book more, I really did, because so many other people did but it just missed it's calling for me.
I can let go of the fact that the plot sounded like two others that I read this year.
The thing that bothered me was well... the chapters.. what was that? Why was everything getting cut off so abruptly? Even the ending kind of fell of the cliff there for me. I was confused for a second wondering if I was missing any pages. But no, it was followed by an authors note right away. Unfinished conversations, cut off at chapters. Did not bring them back during the next chapter. I felt lost and confused and after a while downright annoyed. Conversations, actions, all ending so abruptly chapter after chapter was making me wonder. Oh and the odd lapses in time? One chapter skips months ahead and without warning has left me kind of scratching my head.
Why was it called The Winner's Curse? I don't think that was well explained.
There was romance? I kind of missed it. Did not feel any connection between the two love bird's what so ever.
I like Ronan and some of the plot in on itself was interesting. Arin did become somewhat likeable, but then in the end the position that he was offered in an adult world once again left me scratching my head.
Plus some backstabbing in this book did not seem justifiable.
Anyway. Don't get me wrong, this series has a lot of potential and I did somewhat enjoy it. Was it great? I don't know. But it wasn't amazing to me at all. Maybe it's the cynical side of me talking today, but I had a struggle with this one.
I gave it 3 stars because I am glad on the other hand that Ali made it all better :)

Aww thanks for that! It was fun reading it with you even though I know you struggled with this more than I did. I liked it, I did but I wasn't as in love with it as I was hoping I would be. In fact, I still haven't written my review for it because I think I am still trying to process my thoughts on it.
ReplyDeleteGreat honest review Lily!! And seriously, we need to do another buddy read again. ;)
I'm sorry you didn't love it. I definitely did, but I also didn't read the other two books you're talking about. I really loved the setting, the characters, and I connected and followed the story really well. It's amazing how books connect or don't connect with different people and sometimes can depend on what else we've read or are in the mood for.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm really curious what the other two books you mentioned that you've read with similar plots are. Care to share?

The other one with similar elements that I read earlier in the year was Landry Park and the second one was a indie read ummm The Polaris Uprising. At least they felt like they all had the similar type of elements to me from reading all 3.
DeleteLike you, Lily, I wanted to like this more. I still thought it was well-written and the characters as well as the world came alive, but it just didn't live up to the hype ultimately. :/ Good to know I wasn't alone, though, and fantastic review! :)
ReplyDeleteAww Lily, I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy this book completely. It's such a shame as everyone speak highly about it. I'm even afraid to read as I think my expectations are too high at the moment. Great review :)
ReplyDeleteMan, I set aside time for this after the glowing reviews and now I am uncertain. I am sorry it didn't quite work for you, I think I will give it a try just so I can make up my mind.
ReplyDeleteNow I am disappointed :/
ReplyDeleteLily, I am listening to the audio, and I thought maybe it was the narrator because while I like the world I am just not feeling it.
ReplyDeleteI really loved this book and thought it was great. I'm sorry that you didn't feel the same way. Not every book is going to be for everyone.

I hate that when you feel like you're reading the same plot over and over. I'm sort of off YA reads right now so I doubt I'd pick this up. Now I have even more reason not to bother. Great honest review, Lily! :)
ReplyDeleteSo many people love this, so it's nice to see an alternate pov. I went off the genre a couple years ago, due to this same issue.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review, Lily!
I'm sorry you didn't liked it as much as I did. I think it's difficult to read a book after many wonderful reviews because you always expect something and well it's tricky.
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty cover, but I don't enjoy when plots are overdone either. Hope your next read is more to your liking :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this, but I totally feel ya. I don't know if I'll read it or not; I'm pretty burned out on books like this.
ReplyDeleteOh no, I'm sorry to hear this didn't work for you! I got pretty swept away by it and loved it, but I totally understand your issues. If you continue with the series I hope you like the second book better. Wonderful thoughtful, honest review!
ReplyDeleteSorry this wasn't as amazing as you'd hoped. I wasn't initially drawn to this one, but I saw so many good reviews, I am wanting to try it.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry Winner's Curse didn't meet your expectations, Lily. But I'm glad you were able to enjoy some aspects of it. Maybe the next one will be better. I appreciate your insight into the book, though. Great review. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry this didn't feel that original to you. I feel like the hype around this book is ruining people's fun lately since everyone who got an arc raved about it and now that the rest of the world is reading, it's a tad dsaippointing. Ah, so the pacing was off? :( I really hope I'll enjoy this one since it's so pretty on my shelf and all my friends except for you have really enjoyed it. Eh, I hope your nect book is more satisfying :) Great review, Lily!
ReplyDeleteYeah...I can definitely see why you might have not enjoyed this one as much as you hoped, but I'm glad you still enjoyed it overall Lily! The hype with this one has been extraordinary, so don't be worried about not liking it as much as other people! But I guess I can see why you might have felt the pacing was off though!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing Lily, and, as always, FABULOUS review! <3 Glad you still liked it overall though! <3

Great review Lily! It's understandable that you didn't enjoy this book and I enjoyed how you explained why you didn't enjoy it too. Let's hope the author can make up for it in the next book for you.

I've been seeing so much buzz about this one, but I wasn't sure if it was my kind of read. You touched on several things that seriously drive me crazy in a book, so I'm going to put this one on the back-burner for now. Thank you for your honest and informative review!
ReplyDeleteAww that sucks. I could see this book driving me crazy but I still want to try it.
ReplyDeleteI've heard good things about this book, but I would be kind of confused with the cut off chapters as well. That makes no sense to me. Great review!
